Don't rush (don't) just brush- (no rinsing)

This image pretty much sums up what this blog is all about quite nicely (well almost) as I do prefer an electric toothbrush over a manual one for my clients.
Hopefully we all already floss, (clean in-between), rinse (if you want) then brush twice daily.
The emphasis here is on the RINSING before you brush and not after.(if at all)
So lets look at why

In toothpaste we usually have a time sensitive enamel remineralising ingredient.
A popular one you may all have heard of and with good reason is FLUORIDE
What that means is each time we brush we are adding something into and around our oral cavities to help improve the PH of our mouths (less acidic) and also to aid in the remineralising of our enamel (the white stuff that keeps our teeth strong)
Can you imagine we we were silly enough to then rinse this off with a mouth wash?
We wouldn't do that would we....
I see a fair few clients who sadly do, until I break it down in this way and explain the benefits of a lunch time mouthwash over their current regime.
"But my mouthwash says it has fluoride in it"

I hear you, some do, and some have lots of evidence based research on their efficacy in certain oral health conditions, that said I am a firm believer in the use of mouth wash ONLY pre brushing.
The toothpaste we apply will then have time to work, its viscosity in comparison to mouthwash means it hangs around for even longer and serves us well.
So ditch the post brush rinsing, add it into your lunch time regimen.
One more little tip is to leave it at least one hour after eating before you brush too.
Remember the acids I was just telling you about, I mean we would be silly to spread these all over our teeth after a meal by brushing wouldn't we.
