"Now then Mardy-Bum ........."

We all know what fight or flight means right ?

When you face a stressful situation, your adrenal glands secrete hormones, including cortisol, epinephrine, and small amounts of testosterone, which trigger a cascading effect of reactions that can result in excess oil production (hello acne) , decreased immunity (Hello herpes simplex), and increased blood in your vessels- that pesky opaque under eye skin.... (hello dark circles and eye bags )

Why did it have to go and get so complicated !!

When we have downward moods, what else do we reach for (most of the time)

No that's right it's not usually antioxidant rich fruit and vegetables, its high fats, salts and alcohol containing food and drink (I am being very stereo typical here, this is what I do! )

Refined sugar which is a go to for most, which causes insulin to rise and furthermore increases the risk of skin, smile and systemic health problems

Negative emotions and bad mood may also result in less 'self care' and attention to the likes of important skin care regimen and good diet and lifestyle choices,

To make matters worse, research has shown that cortisol can lower the energy metabolism of your skin cells by up to

40 % , and therefore reduce their ability to respond to stress and the damage it causes.

So turn that frown upside down!

When something positive happens, you get the release of chemicals like endorphins, oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, the so-called feel-good hormones

Feel good hormones are being increasingly linked to good systemic, skin and smile health and we will look at this in more detail in some future blogs.

For now try to practice good spirits and be mindful of mood a little more - Get your skin smiling again, by smiling again.. (see what I did there.... I know, I know)

Take Care
